Logo Boycott America's Next Top Model & Their Advertisers

Say NO to Eroticized Violence

America's Next Top Model had a program on 3/21/07 where models vied for best looking corpse in a series of "fashion images".

"The lithe lot of 'em are arrayed in awkward, broken poses, splayed out in cold concrete corridors, lifeless limbs positioned bloodily, just so, at the bottom of staircases, bathtubs and back alleys, mimicking their demise via stabbing, shooting, electrocution, drowning, poisoning, strangulation, decapitation and organ theft (!), to judges' comments of "Gorgeous!" "Fantastic!" "Amazing!" "Absolutely beautiful!" and, of my favorite, "Death becomes you, young lady!"-- Jennifer L. Pozner, executive director of Women In Media & News

Take Action and let them know we are fed up with overt sexualized violence. Once violence is sexualized it is much less likely to be perceived as violence.

Please consider sending the following letter or write your own to the advertisers and CW affiliates nationwide, Dawn Ostroff is CW CEO in LA.

Dear Dawn Ostroff and others:

I refuse to watch America's Next Top Model and am joining the hundreds of others across the country/globe who are actively organizing a boycott of all of your program's advertisers due to the airing of Crime Scene poses where models were asked to imitate "beautiful" corpses.

Sadly, we live in world where violence to women is commonplace, where females of all ages are under constant attack both on the streets and in our homes. We live in a world full of glamorized media images of violence and many are learning to entertain themselves and laugh at graphic, violent, sexualized images of death. Consider the growing popularity of images and videos of dead and tortured women (necrophilia) being used for masturbation by thousands of young boys and men across the country and globe. I realize you are not the ONLY media group or advertiser to promote the explicit murder of women as something sexy, edgy, cool and acceptable.

America's Next Top Model helped make acceptable the idea that dead bloody, strangled, shot, decapitated, bruised and abused women are the really sexy ones. I would like a public apology and I would like to see all fashion models get up from the floor and learn to stand with dignity on their own two feet. I want them in comfortable clothing that does not compromise their movement, posture and agility. I want them portrayed actively contributing to society in a productive manner. I want diverse sizes of fashion models and want more racial, class and age diversity.

You can help make this happen. You can start by being part of the solution for a safer world-- rather than contributing as you have to the horrific epidemic abuse of women and girls and the wholesale violation of women's human rights. The broad social harms to all women cannot be ignored based on how willing an individual model is or how convincing her bloody body. Please respond when you can. Sincerely,
