What sort of judicial system puts two sisters away for life for being mere accomplices to a 1993 robbery? The teens who actually committed the robbery only served 2 years and have long been free. Neither Jamie nor Gladys Scott had a criminal record and the judge never explained why the Scott sisters deserved such severe sentences.

 Judge Marcus Gordon, who presided over this case, has a history of racially biased rulings. Sixteen years later, the Scott sisters are still in prison. And if Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour doesn’t intervene, they will die in prison — all over a robbery of $11.

To be clear, the Scott Sisters have maintained their innocence throughout this travesty of justice. The Scott Sisters were not present during the robbery. Of the three men that committed and confessed to the robbery, one, a 14 year old boy was threatened with being sent to Parchman Penitentiary and “being made a woman” if he did not implicate the Scott Sisters. He signed a statement as part of plea agreement without an attorney and without reading what he signed. In 1998, one of the three men signed an affidavit stating that the Scott Sisters had nothing to do with the robbery.
Why did the NAACP link it to a robbery of 11 dollars then? If you could clear it up that would be great. Thanks!
Thank you for writing about this case however; Jamie and Gladys were not accomplices to this robbery. They actually were not present when this alleged robbery occurred.
